Found this string while looking for a LiDE 500F driver compatible with Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard). I have an iMac (Intel, from February 2006) and have had no trouble with the CanoScan – until Leopard. Canon did provide an updated driver at the time (as they also did for their WiFi colour printer, a PIXMA iP5200R. I'm hoping they'll do likewise again?

Does anyone know about the compatibility of Epson scanners with intel macs? I recently bought Epson's Perfection 4990 Photo, as I got rid of my very old Epson scanner when I bought new intel imacs. I downloaded the most recent driver which seems to be intel-compatible, but I'm told by Apple that the bundled Silverfast SE 6.0 won't work, and the bundled Photoshop Elements is the 2.0 version which is asking for a classic environment. I've tried to contact Epson tech support in many ways, all to no avail...(absolutely no response from their e-mail tech support, anf can't get through by phone AND they've discontinued their 800 number)...which makes me want to pack the scanner up and switch to another brand, although I can't seem to find one compatible with the intels. Someone at Apple suggested the Canon 8800 F—does anyone know about this scanner? I'm looking for good quality phot and film scanner, and originally got the 4990 because it has a dmax density of 4.0, which will provide better film scans.

I was surfing around the net and found this post, I bought a second hand Canon N650U as it seemed to have the most support for Mac, Windows and Linux at the time. I now have an intel laptop with the latest version of Photoshop CS3 installed. I found as a workaround, that I have to tick the little box 'open in Rosetta' in order to get the driver to work. That makes sense, it isn't an intel native driver. I just have to shut down Photoshop once scanning is done and then open it up with the 'Rosetta' checkbox unchecked. Fast again, no problems, generally scanning is about the same speed on the G5 as with this laptop and PhotoShop in rosetta so no hassles. I was looking around for another solution and found VueScan which seems to do the trick nicely for a bunch of different model scanners. You may wish to check this out, but it is not free at 39.95. But at least that may be better than purchasing a new scanner. The software is fully intel native, but is not supported on all the current scanners.
