Mac OS X allows you to associate comments with files by using the "Spotlight Comment" field in the Finder's "Get Info..." dialog.
This is a very fragile mechanism that works by storing the comments in the (notorious) invisible .DS_Store files in each folder. The comments can be easily lost when you are using a file system which does not support them or when a program which does not "know" about them, manipulates the files. This can be something is easy as performing a "Save As..." in an application.
We do not recommend using this mechanism for anything since the chances are good that the comments will be lost at some stage.
One operation that can cause Mac OS X to "lose" file comments is the renaming of files and some file renaming programs will simply "lose" comments.
A Better Finder Rename 8, by default, copies file comments from the old file name to the new file name so that you should never lose anything through it. This is, however, a slow operation and if you are unconcerned about file comments, you can switch this feature off in the "General Tab" of the "Preferences...". This will allow for much faster renames.
