Macs: Migration completed What is it all about? At the World Wide Developer Conference in 2005, Apple announced that is was about to abandon the long standing PowerPC technology and switch over to Intel CPUs. On the 10th of January 2006, at the MacWorld San Francisco 2006, Steve Jobs announced the first "Intel Macs": the new iMac and PowerBook Pro. Many existing programs will continue to work in an emulation mode that Apple calls "Rosetta", but they will not take advantage of the native Intel CPU speed. Some applications, including contextual menus do not work in Rosetta however. Furthermore, in order to gain the full speed advantage offered by the new Intel processors, the programs need to be specifically written for the CPU. Such applications are distributed as "Universal Applications" that work at full speed on both Intel and PowerPC based Macintosh computers.
