The Conversions category changes the case of names and makes them fit other systems.

Case

  • Convert to lowercase and Convert to uppercase
  • Convert to sentence case capitalizes the first letter; options force the other letters to lowercase and capitalize proper nouns
  • Convert to title case capitalizes every word; you choose whether words are delimited by spaces only, by punctuation and spaces, or by every non-letter character
  • Lexical case conversion understands small words, acronyms and names: the lord of the rings → The Lord of the Rings. See Lexical case conversion

Encoding and spelling

  • Decode percent encoding turns web-style names back into readable ones: My%20Report.pdf → My Report.pdf
  • Expand camel case inserts a separator between the words of a camel-case name: MyHolidayPhoto.jpg → My Holiday Photo.jpg
  • Remove diacritical marks replaces accented letters by their plain equivalents: Café Résumé.pdf → Cafe Resume.pdf

Other systems

  • Make file names Windows NTFS/SMB compatible replaces the characters that Windows does not allow in names (\ / : * ? " < > |) with the Filler: character, for files that go to a Windows server or a NAS
  • Convert to valid Mac OS 9 file name shortens names to 31 characters and removes colons, for very old systems

Case conversions work on the name, the extension or both through the Change: popup. Converting only the extension to lowercase is a common tidy-up for camera files.

Example

Exports from a design tool are named MyHolidayPhoto.JPG, CompanyLogoDark.PNG, … and should read My Holiday Photo.jpg, Company Logo Dark.png, …

  1. Choose Expand camel case with a space in Separator:: My Holiday Photo.JPG
  2. Add Convert to lowercase as a second action and set its Change: popup to only the file extension: My Holiday Photo.jpg

The second action leaves the name itself alone because of its Change: setting, see Changing the file name, the extension or both.
