Better Rename runs in the macOS App Sandbox, as all Mac App Store applications do. It can only touch files and folders that you have handed to it: by dropping them onto the preview list, by choosing them in the Open… dialog or through the Finder context menu.

When a rename needs access to a folder that you have not handed over, for instance a folder that contains a file you dropped, the program shows Better Rename needs you to grant it access to a folder. Click Grant Access and confirm the folder in the dialog that follows. macOS remembers the choice.

Granting access in advance

Choose File › Grant Permanent Access To Folder… and select a folder. Better Rename may then rename anything inside that folder, including its subfolders, without asking again. Granting access to your home folder covers most cases.

Taking it back

File › Revoke All Permanent Access removes every folder permission you granted. Better Rename asks for access again the next time it needs it.

Access that macOS itself grants when you drop files or use the Open… dialog is not affected by this menu item.

If a rename is still refused after access has been granted, see Why can’t I rename a file?.
