The Parent Folder Name category adds the name of the folder a file is in to the file name. With subfolders processed, every file receives the name of its own folder, which is how a folder tree such as Paris/IMG_4821.jpg and Rome/IMG_4822.jpg becomes Paris IMG_4821.jpg and Rome IMG_4822.jpg before the photos are merged into one folder.

  • Add folder name to beginning and Add folder name to end, optionally with a space between folder name and file name
  • Insert folder name in front of existing text, Insert folder name after existing text and Insert folder name at position

To add more than one level of folders, see Path components.

Example

Invoices are filed in one folder per client, Acme/invoice.pdf, Globex/invoice.pdf, …, and are to be merged into a single folder without losing the client name.

  1. Drop the folder that contains the client folders onto the list, tick Subfolders and their contents and untick Folders, so that only the files are renamed
  2. Choose Add folder name to beginning and tick Add a trailing space behind the folder name

The preview shows Acme invoice.pdf and Globex invoice.pdf. The files can now be moved into one folder without a conflict.
