A Better Finder Rename renames folders as readily as files. The three Process: checkboxes at the bottom of the main window decide what the actions apply to:

  • Files applies the actions to files
  • Folders applies the actions to folders
  • Subfolders and their contents also lists the files and folders inside the folders you added, all the way down the folder tree

If both Files and Folders are unticked, the preview shows a message that the files are hidden.

Adding folders

Drop a folder onto the preview list or choose File › Open…. The items you add yourself appear in bold; they are the root items of the list. With Subfolders and their contents ticked, the contents of the folders appear below them in normal weight. These items are only in the list as long as the checkbox is ticked, and they disappear when you untick it.

You cannot add a file as a root item if it already is, or could become, an item inside one of the folders in the list. To rename part of a folder tree, add the top-level folder and use a filter action to exclude the items you do not want to rename.

Renaming the folder itself

With Folders ticked, the folder you added is renamed along with its contents. Untick Folders to rename only the files inside it, or untick Files to rename only the folders.

Sequence numbers in folder trees

Actions that number files, such as Produce sequence number list, have a Sort each folder separately checkbox. With it ticked, numbering starts again in every folder; without it, the files of the whole tree are numbered as one list. See Preview order and sequence numbers.

Perform slow but accurate folder size calculation in the Settings window adds up the contents of a folder when sorting by size.
