The Date & Time category names files after a date: the shooting date of a photo, the creation or modification date of a file, or today’s date.

  • Rename to date/time replaces the whole name with the date, e.g. IMG_4821.jpg → 2026-10-14 15.32.07.jpg. A sequence number in a second step keeps photos taken in the same second apart
  • Add date/time to beginning and Add date/time to end: holiday.jpg → 2026-10-14 holiday.jpg
  • Insert date/time in front of existing text, Insert date/time after existing text and Insert date/time at position put the date inside the existing name

Options

  • Use: picks the date: Content Creation Date (e.g. EXIF), which is the shooting date of photos and videos, File creation date, File modification date or Today. See custom shooting date priority order for how the shooting date is found when files carry several dates
  • Date: and Time: choose the format of each part, e.g. YYYY-MM-DD and HH.MM.SS, or leave one of them out
  • Month as: writes the month as Numbers or Names; Month Names: chooses the language and length of the name
  • Clock: is 24 hours or 12 hours (with am/pm), with AM/PM in uppercase as an option
  • Format: sets the order and separator between date and time, e.g. Date_Time or Time-Date
  • Time Zone: and the Add Hour(s) / Subtract Hour(s) adjustment correct cameras whose clock was set to another time zone or was running late
  • Day ends: moves the end of the day to 1 to 7 AM, so that photos taken after midnight at a party or a wedding are filed with the previous day

If a file has no shooting date, the Content Creation Date falls back to the file dates according to the priority order. For complete control over the date tokens, the tag actions offer every part of the date as a separate tag.

Example

Photos from two cameras and a phone should sort by the moment they were taken in any application, so the shooting date and time go in front of the name: IMG_4821.jpg → 2026-10-14 15.32.07 IMG_4821.jpg.

  1. Choose Add date/time to beginning
  2. Set Use: to Content Creation Date (e.g. EXIF)
  3. Set Date: to YYYY-MM-DD, Time: to HH.MM.SS and Format: to Date Time

A space is placed between the date and the existing name. Photos from a camera whose clock was an hour ahead are corrected with Subtract Hour(s) 1, and photos taken after midnight at a party stay with the previous day by setting Day ends: to 4 hours. Scans and screenshots without a shooting date take their file creation date instead.
