The Sequence Numbers category numbers files in the order of the preview list, see Preview order and sequence numbers.

Producing and adding numbers

  • Produce sequence number list replaces the whole name: with Prefix: Hubble , Start with: 1, Padding: 3, the files become Hubble 001.jpg, Hubble 002.jpg, …
  • Add sequence number at beginning and Add sequence number to end: holiday.jpg → holiday 01.jpg
  • Insert sequence number in front of existing text, Insert sequence number after existing text and Insert sequence number at position put the number inside the name

All of them share Start with:, Step value:, Padding: (the minimum number of digits, filled with leading zeros) and the Sort first: / Then: popups with Sort each folder separately. Prefix: and Suffix: exist only in Produce sequence number list. The gear button next to Start with: turns on auto-increment counters, which continue the numbering from one rename to the next.

Changing and removing existing numbers

  • Change existing sequence numbers works on a block of digits that is already in the name: Apply to: chooses the 1st to 6th block of numbers from the left or from the right, Calculations: adds or subtracts a value, and the padding sets the minimum number of digits. IMG_4821.jpg with “subtract 4000” → IMG_0821.jpg
  • Remove numbers removes All numbers or one block of numbers counted from the left or the right: Track 07 - Song.mp3 with “the 1st block from the left” → Track - Song.mp3

A “block of numbers” is a run of consecutive digits; 2026-10-14 contains three blocks.

See also Roman numerals and alphabetical sequences for the same actions with other numbering systems.

Example

Wedding photos from three photographers should become one numbered series in the order in which they were taken.

  1. Add all the photos to the list and choose Produce sequence number list
  2. Enter Wedding (with a space at the end) in Prefix:, 1 in Start with:, 1 in Step value: and 3 in Padding:
  3. Set Sort first: to By EXIF digital camera date (from oldest to newest) and Then: to By name

The files become Wedding 001.jpg, Wedding 002.jpg, … in shooting order, regardless of the camera they came from. Tick Sort each folder separately to start a new series in each photographer’s folder instead.
