Configuring a Quick Action

You have many different ways in which you can trigger A Better Finder Rename from the Finder.

If you wish to trigger A Better Finder Rename via a context menu in the Finder, we recommend configuring it as a Service, but you can also create a Finder Quick Action if you prefer this method of invocation, but it is a little more convoluted to set up.

  1. in the Finder, go to the Applications folder and find the Utilities folder inside that folder.
  2. launch Automator

Automator is a powerful automation tool for macOS and a full explanation is outside the scope of this help topic, but you can use its Help menu, and many third party tutorials can be found on the internet.

  1. click New Document
  2. choose Quick Action and click the Choose button
  3. in Workflow receives current select files or folders
  4. make your preferred selections for Image and Colour; this is what the Quick Action will look like
  5. in the Search Bar, type Open Finder
  6. drag & drop the top entry Open Finder Items into the Drag actions or files here to build your workflow. area
  7. in the Open with: popup menu, select Other… and find A Better Finder Rename 12
  8. in the File menu, select Save... and give your Quick Action your preferred name

Your Quick Action should now appear when you control-click (or right-click) any files or folders in the Finder.

If you do not have any Presets defined, A Better Finder Rename will launch with the selected files or folders preselected.

If you do have one or more presets defined, the Presets Popup will be shown, allowing you to select which preset you want to apply to the files.
