The View › Preview submenu controls what the preview list shows:

  • Show Current Name Column shows the names before the rename next to the new names
  • Show Intermediate Results Column adds the This Action column in a multi-step rename, showing the name after the selected action rather than after the whole sequence
  • Show File Path Column shows the folder each item is in, which helps when renaming subfolders
  • Highlight Changes marks the characters an action inserts or removes. It works when a single action is active
  • Show Invisible Characters shows spaces and other invisible characters as symbols, so that a stray space at the end of a name becomes visible
  • Toggle Preview Pane (Command-I) shows or hides the info pane below the list with the Quick Look preview and the meta-data tabs
  • Preview Conflict Resolution shows the numbers that automatic conflict resolution will add, instead of showing the conflicting names as they would be

The View menu also holds Toggle Sidebar (Control-S), Show Action Panel (Command-K) and Show Presets Panel (Shift-Command-P) for the Advanced Sidebar.

The items that do not change are shown in gray in the preview. If every item is gray, the action does not apply to the names in the list, for instance a Replace text action whose search text does not occur in any name.
