The Tags category builds names from the meta-data stored inside files: EXIF data of photos, ID3 tags of music, video properties, Spotlight attributes and file properties. See Tag-based renaming for the list of tags and how to use them.

  • Rename using tag(s) replaces the whole name with the Pattern:, e.g. <ShootingDate4DigitYear>-<ShootingDate0Month>-<ShootingDate0Day> <CameraModel>
  • Add tag(s) to beginning and Add tag(s) to end keep the existing name and add the pattern to it
  • Add tag(s) at position, Insert tag(s) in front of existing text and Insert tag(s) after existing text put the pattern inside the name

Files that do not contain the meta-data a tag asks for keep their name unchanged.

Example

Holiday photos from a camera and a phone should be grouped by month: IMG_4821.jpg → 2026-10 IMG_4821.jpg.

  1. Choose Add tag(s) to beginning
  2. Drag <ShootingDate4DigitYear> and <ShootingDate0Month> from the Available Tags: list into Pattern:, type - between them and a space after them: <ShootingDate4DigitYear>-<ShootingDate0Month>

Scans and screenshots without a shooting date are shown in gray and keep their names, which makes them easy to spot. Handle them in a second pass with a date action, which falls back to the file dates.
