Most location-tagging jobs fall into one of a few standard situations, depending on what is already in your files. Each guide below is self-contained and walks you through one situation from start to finish.
Which situation are you in?
My photos have no location data at all
Typical for DSLR and mirrorless cameras without a GPS module. The GPS and IPTC columns both show “no data”. You want to add locations from scratch, by finding the place on a map.
My iPhone photos have GPS coordinates, but no place names
The iPhone records GPS coordinates but does not fill in the standard IPTC fields for City, Province/State, Country and Sub-location. You want to fill in the missing place names, in bulk, based on the coordinates that are already there.
The place names aren’t what I want them to be
The data is there, but you want New South Wales instead of NSW, Bennelong Point instead of Sydney Opera House, or your own archive convention. You want to decide exactly what goes into each field.
The location in my photos is wrong
A stale manual camera setting, a bad GPS fix, or coordinates that point at your vantage point rather than the subject. You want to overwrite the wrong data with the right location.
I want to remove location data before sharing
The opposite problem: precise GPS coordinates can give away your home, workplace or your children’s favourite park. You want to strip the location data — or blur it — from copies you intend to publish.
