Download Boring Old Menu Bar 1.27

for macOS 11 Big Sur and later

A while ago, macOS 11 Big Sur introduced a new visual style to macOS. More recently, macOS 26 Tahoe did the same thing again. While Big Sur grew on me, and I'm sure (eventually) Tahoe will, the transparent menu bar is a bit of a legibility nightmare and not something I can live with. So I developed Boring Old Menu Bar to bring the "perfectly fine" macOS Catalina menu bar.

Different Colors

The Catalina menu bar is perfectly fine, but white looks better in the light mode.. and while I'm at it why not add more options?

Rounded Corners

Should Apple have gone for rounded screen corners to complete the iPad-esque look? Judge yourself.

Features

Boring Old Menu Bar is brought to you by a development team with over 20 years of Mac software development experience, and is based on the very latest platform technologies.

  • separate settings for light and dark mode
  • support for dynamic wall papers
  • support for multiple desktops (spaces)
  • support for multiple displays
  • possibility to hide the menu bar icon to reclaim space
  • no haxies, KEXT, etc..
  • based on perfectly safe programming practices: the worst that can happen is that you have to force quit & manually set your desktop wallpaper again from the System Settings/ Preferences
  • rounded screen corners can be independently activated
  • native Apple Silicon support
  • the kind of user interface that you expect from a Mac app
  • Recognizes resolution & desktop image changes automatically
  • Automatic software updates
  • Free 14-day free trial
  • Developed by a team with over twenty years of continuous Mac development

Limitations

Boring Old Menu Bar delivers the opaque menu bar and the rounded corners you're after. However, it is still essentially a hack that takes a screenshot of your current wallpaper and superimposes an opaque menu bar on it automatically. It works almost perfectly, almost all of the time.

  • on MacOS Tahoe, Apple's dynamic and slide show wallpapers don't work very well, and it is better to set either a static image or a static color background directly in Boring Old Menu Bar.
  • in general, you will have the best experience, if you use as few advanced wallpaper features as possible, because this limits the number of wallpaper changes that need to be made.
  • using many different Spaces with different wallpapers is supported, but creates a lot of overhead.

There is a complete setup guide for each scenario on the troubleshooting page.
